OH MY GOOOOOOD, I saw this movie as a kid and was SO into it. I even remember that some websites put the little pi symbol on their main pages as an easter egg, and it was FREAKING COOLEST SHIT EVER to child-me. Then I re-watched it some months ago, and...well, your recap is really spot-on! Truly a gem of its era!
