Sorry to hear about Barry. My dog needed an ophthalmologist last year, which is how I learned there were only THREE in the entire state of New Jersey. Then the one that examined my dog left the state, so now there are only TWO. My dog's eyes were so terrible (a laundry list of problems that did not include cataracts) that she went completely blind and eventually had to have her eyes removed. But on the bright side, dogs adapt *incredibly* well to partial/complete blindness. She can navigate the house and neighborhood like a champ, and still goes to daycare and grooming with no problem. Obviously hoping for no vision loss for Barry but if it does happen, he will still lead a full and happy life.

Also, KQVI was the best game ever and I squealed when I saw the reference. Damn those Cliffs of Logic!

Oh yeah, Barry doesn't seem to notice at all! <3

Ditto. My husband and I spent 6 agonizing months and the cost of 1 car trying to save our dog's eyes. We lost the battle, he had his eyes surgically removed, and... he was fine. It took him like 3 weeks to figure it all out, he's a superhero (specifically, Daredevil).

He would definitely say he prefers being blind to wearing a cone all the time. And he's telling me to tell Barry (and you) that it's all gonna be okay :)

Immediate comment because of the King's Quest VI reference. I loved this game but never beat it and it still haunts me.

I feel this post so hard…over the summer my black lab suddenly lost his vision and off we headed to pad the doggie ophthalmologist’s boat fund…he had SARDS which is a condition where dogs totally lose all eyesight with no warning and for no fucking reason. This was three weeks before we were due to move.

It’s kind of funny watching him bump into things though. He has banged his damn hard-ass head into so many signposts, walls, fences, curbs, yard signs, the backs of my knees…

When we walk, he high-steps up to where he thinks the curb is. 🤣🤣

But he is finally figuring out how to be a blind dog and we have developed a good cadence of leash tightening, leading, his understanding of us saying “look out,” guidance with claps and snaps, and more. He’s a super smart dog and he’s only been blind a few months. None of us knew what to do at first. He’ll get there.

BUT THEN. Couple months go by, we come downstairs in the morning to find at least 20 piles of bloody puke. Whisked off to the vet for another Toyota worth of tests. He has Addison’s disease, where your adrenal gland stops working. He requires a shot every month for the rest of his life that costs $150 each 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ And he has to pee every three hours due to the medication. He’s worth it though and is living a happy life of treats and belly rubs.

Hope Barry gets good news, and thanks for being you and being so fucking funny.

So sorry to hear about poor Barry (and you!). Hope the surgery is a success and that you get some relief from expensive vet bills for a while. I understand - during this past year our dog essentially started to go into liver failure - but thankfully recovered (all of the diagnostics seemed to point to a Leptospirosis infection as the cause - despite him being up to date on his vaccine). He was all better it seemed and off the meds, then two weeks ago started showing signs of illness again (so now our vet thinks it is at least partially autoimmune). He had to spend 3 consecutive days at the vet's office (his personal Hell) and is now terrified of the car. Those three days added another $3000 to an already very expensive year of veterinary care.

Love this! The things we do for animals. I have a foster kitten who has ringworm. I identified it within 24 hours of collecting her. Had I known what would be involved? I know I would not have. It is so much work. And? You can contract it, which I did (a first for me)! It's a real hoot slathering yourself with ointments and washing with Head and Shoulders. All that is to say, on the plus side, you cannot contract his eye issues. :) But? You are a fantastic mom to him and I LOVE reading about his antics.

Girl get you some pet insurance if you don’t already own it. It won’t help with the eye expenses but could with the new one you haven’t found yet. Also dog dermatologist is also a job that you can and should get because $$$$$. Which I found out when my dog suddenly became allergic to all of the outside after having grown up on the mean streets of Wilmington, DE and lived in the country side of Chester County, Pa for 5 years without a single issue. She now takes a boat load of medicine, eats a special diet, and still needs to bathed 2-3x each week. This all after the gagillion dollars we spent just to diagnosis her.

So, I feel the pain.

I'm so sorry about your dog and his cataracts. Can I just offer a glimmer of good news on the horizon? Tomorrow - November 19th - is officially World Toilet Day, which is definitely related to Butt News, amirite. https://worldtoilet.org/

I swear to god that dogthamologist makes all their money off of golden retrievers, as my parents' goldens have visited them regularly for over a decade.

I worked for a veterinary ophthalmologist for several years - they are expensive! But cataract surgery, especially in a young dog, is one of my favorite surgeries to send them home after because it is like MAGIC - they can see so much better even just by discharge that evening. I hope these are his last medical shenanigans for a loooooong time!

I finally $$ subscribed and hope it helps a little with his treatment! Our dog Macy tore her ACL (dogs have those?) and needs an expensive European vacation's worth of surgery to fix it. We feel your pain. All the best to Barold! Keep us posted! <3

Fellow expensive dog owner here…(I have a “blonde” golden named Luna who has also regularly cost me several cars by now. I tell her Barry is her cousin). Sending Barry all the good vibes to STOP HIS EYES GETTING WORSE and hopefully you can get some stress free years with him in the future to just enjoy each other’s company outside of a vet office. 💜
