I would like to request a viewing of Clueless, the masterpiece from 1995. I would also like to request a viewing of Empire Records, because those of us who watched it in the 90s LOVE IT, but the people my age who have watched it as adults say it is TERRIBLE. I need a ruling.

Expand full comment

YES TO BOTH OF THESE REQUESTS!

Expand full comment

I watched Empire Records as an adult and hated it, but have friends who watched it as youngsters in the 90s and loved it so YES. Please do this one!

Expand full comment

YES - Empire Records would be my #1 request since it made a HUGE impression on me. I also was very into Reality Bites. Maybe I don't want that ruined though... Actually Camp Nowhere was one that I'd love ruined, it's like a tween precursor to the scrappy ensemble-cast rom com.

Expand full comment

Reality Bites is in her book Shit, Actually!

Expand full comment

I loved Camp Nowhere and want it reviewed and subsequently ruined so bad.

Expand full comment

AH yes! I should’ve read the comments before commenting myself. Strong agree!

Expand full comment

Second Empire Records as a diehard fan.

Expand full comment

Rex Manning Day!!

Expand full comment

YES to both of these, but extra especially Empire Records, which I watched weekly in the 7th-9th grades and directly impacted my decision to work at a Sam Goody and have a wildly inappropriate relationship with my decades older manager. Everyone I know who watches it as an adult is like "WUT, this is garbage."

Expand full comment

I second this request.

Expand full comment

Empire Records is a Shrödinger’s Cat of a movie, in that it is simultaneously terrible and not-terrible (and I’m someone who watched it in the 90s and liked it).

Expand full comment

YES to Empire Records!

I’m scared to show Empire Records to my partner for fear this will happen.

Expand full comment

Yes to both!!

Expand full comment

agree! my cousin watched it in the 90s and was like “you’ll love it” and i watched it and cringed all the way through

10 Things I Hate About You!! Esp because it was filmed in Tacoma and I recently re-enacted Julia Stiles' table dance and remember all of the lesbian jokes because she didn't smile all the time and wanted to go to Sarah Lawrence?? What was that movie even about, I can barely remember.

Expand full comment

Huge Julia Stiles stan here. I second this and raise you one Save The Last Dance plz. :)

I third it, and raise you Down to You. Starring Julia Stiles and Freddie Prinze Jr., featuring Selma Blair, Rosario Dawson, and SO many more! Perhaps my all time favourite "teen" rom-com of the late 90s/early aughts era.

Expand full comment

Duuude thank you I have never seen that!

Expand full comment

I *JUST* watched this movie for the first time even though I grew up in Tacoma and was in high school when it came out. Still not sure what it was about.

Expand full comment

I never watched either! (Hi Brad, yes, it's your BFF Amanda.)

Expand full comment

Omg Amanda! Thank you so much for alerting me to Butt News!!!

Expand full comment

100% my pleasure. 27 years of alerting each other to the best things!

All the 90s women alternative music too, would love to see this one reviewed as well! There is a theme here of 90s high school movies. ❤

I'd love to hear your take on Center Stage. It's my favorite guilty pleasure movie, but it's so terrible. And, features a baby Zoe Saldana!

Expand full comment

YES please Center Stage would be amazing

Expand full comment

Omg omg omg omg omg LOVE it, YES x 10000 and I just watched it and will watch it on demand in perpetuity! 🩰 “How come ballet can’t be like this?!?”

Expand full comment

OMG this would be excellent

Expand full comment

Twister! It is both cheesy and genuinely well-crafted in that way only action movies of the '90s could be.

Expand full comment

RIP Bill Paxton. Also could be the space to figure out why Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman occasionally seem to be the same person?

Expand full comment

I could go for a whole 'natural disasters movie marathon' - Twister, Dantes Peak, Deep Impact!

Expand full comment

I have an entire theory about how Helen Hunt's character was coded as gay. I have watched this movie too many times.

Expand full comment

I’m intrigued!! I’ve been too blinded by her master-level passive-aggressiveness to see anything else, but I will definitely watch for that subtext next time I randomly catch Twister on TV…so, probably later this week.

Expand full comment

Yesss!

I would love to hear your thoughts on Point Break because it is an iconic 90s classic, also Patrick Swayze

While You Were Sleeping. Honestly, I love Sandra Bullock movies in general just to put on and cheese out to but the plot of this one cracks me up every time.

Expand full comment

love this movie , also Practical Magic

Expand full comment

During early pandemic I watched 36 Sandra Bullock movies in a row, and this one was LEGIT GOOD. I ended up reading about it, it sounds like the cast loved each other and it was a joy for them to film, which makes it even better to watch.

Expand full comment

Yes, please to Practical Magic! I recently rewatched it and it made no sense and I would love to read Lindy's review of it.

Expand full comment

The Net please! It was just added to Netflix and the whole time I was watching it, I was wishing for a Butt News post.

Expand full comment

I second this one!

Imagine the sheer amount of screenshots of Sandy’s computer screen!

Expand full comment

Please please do either Runaway Bride or My Best Friend’s Wedding! 90s classics and great outfits, but wow so much to unpack in these.

Expand full comment

Yes! The Butt News on My Best Friend’s Wedding put me on a Julia Roberts kick and I just rewatched Runaway Bride. It would be so perfect for this. So much weird dialogue and plot holes. There were moments I thought it was going to get good but it never quite made any sense at all! Despite Julia Roberts heroic efforts that made it enjoyable anyway.

Now and Then (which also features legend Gabby Hoffman!)

Oh my gosh, I feel like I've seen people mentioning this movie a lot lately, and it reminds me how much I need to watch it again!! I definitely second this rec!!

Please excuse me I was too excited to spell check her name! GABY HOFFMANN!

Would love to see your reviews for Troop Beverly Hills, Can't Hardly Wait, and Death Becomes Her. Maybe While You Were Sleeping around the holidays?

I recommended this too!

Heathers would be amazing. Also Mannequin. And maybe Adventures in Babysitting?

Expand full comment

Heather’s pleeeeeeeezzzzeeee!

Mannequin, Adventures In Babysitting and Earth Girls Are Easy were recorded in my diary from 1994 as my favorite movies of all time.

All of these.

Can you do Splash? Or maybe Pump Up the Volume with Cristian Slater which I thought was soooo cool when I was 11!

Expand full comment

I would love to read her thoughts on Pump Up the Volume! My husband and I both remember loving it but have wondered how it would hold up to a viewing now.
